Survey Results and More

People are still hard at work on Mad Cow socks and it’s great to see that players are still posting them to share with us even if their divisions are full. I know that many of us are getting a real kick out of seeing the differences in the color combinations. Pictures of finished socks are also great blog fodder for your hosts so keep them coming.
Looking at the discussions on Flickr I also see people talking about what they’ve earned so far. Check it out! There were apparently more than a few among you who felt the awakening of a competitive beast inside you – not that it’s a bad thing. Many of you surprised yourselves with how quick you finished your socks. Of course some of the lessons learned are more basic like the first time you did a short row heel or making jogless jogs. All good things!
Felicia and I have been learning too. Your answers to our little survey helped a lot. You were pretty evenly split (49%-47%) among those who only want 1-3 days between rounds and those who need a little longer. It’s understandable since we’re all really anxious to move along while, at the same time, we all have things to do besides knit.
There was a much greater divide on the question of when to start the rounds. The clear winner with 60% is the weekend but there were a few who made good arguments for why the weekdays are better (for them) and quite a few (30%) don’t care.
We have thought it all over and here is the deal. We’ll post the specs – yarn requirement, needles and gauge if available – within 48 hours of the close of the last division. For example, we would bet that we’ll have a 16th finisher in Wendy’s division (go Newbies!) by this evening. If that’s the case then we’ll post the specs no later than Sunday night.
Are we all clear so far? Good, then let’s move on.
To try and keep things moving while still allowing for people to rest their hands, do the laundry, eat, sleep – we’re going to plan on starting the new round within 3-5 days of when we post the specs. We’ll determine the start date of the next round with an eye towards keeping it close to the weekends – but it won’t always fall on a Saturday or Sunday. We’ll post the start date for the next round with the specs so there will be time to prepare yourself. Following the example above, if the specs are posted on Sunday then it’s likely that the next pattern will be sent to you on Thursday or Friday.
We will try to avoid releasing patterns on Easter and Passover. I’m not sure how we’ll work around it but we’ll figure it out.
There is no one perfect solution that will work for everyone but we hope that this will work for most of you.

Sounds fair – thanks for listening to all our opinions. What’s the likelihood that you’d wait until later in the day for a weekday release? Would that make it easier for those who work outside the home? Would that add a bigger burden to those outside the US? Just a thought, and really if you want to just post and not think about timing, I don’t blame you!
OOoooooh I’m so excited for the next pattern! (Even though I have to reknit the mad cows if I want them to fit me! SOB.)
Thanks again for this fun idea!

I second what Carrie said. It sounds like you were able to hear what folks said, and pick some good options to satisfy the most people possible. Thanks again for all your hard work!

Sounds like you’ve very thoughtfully taken all the comments into consideration. You’re allowing a fair amount of time to gather supplies and notice of the upcoming round – and it sounds as though it’s likely to rotate a bit as to day of the week, which should be enough to satisfy most folks (weekend workers, day workers, overseas, etc.) Thanks for all the work on this.

Thanks, ladies, for all the hard work you’re putting into this!!
I think the way you’re planning it out sounds like it’s a fair solution.

You are doing a great job. Is there a forum somewhere to submit a couple of suggestions for next time? (I hope there is a next time – this is so great!)

Sounds fair – thanks for trying to accommodate all of our differences – timezones, work schedules etc. You’re such good hosts!

Hurray! I see that Brittany D has finished her socks! Go, gal !
(Personally, I’m hoping for a Thursday pattern-release. My husband’s birthday is Saturday, and he’ll be wanting some attention — only right, yes?) Either way you schedule it, I’m sure it’ll be great. I’m looking forward to some more super-focused knitting. Thanks again for this unique opportunity to explore new styles of working our craft.

I am so excited I’m about to burst! I am so glad that I have fellow knitters to share my joy with. Non-knitters think I am LOONY TOONS. Okay, I am, but still. I am glad to see that Wendy’s division is full and I’m anxious to go on to round 2 ASAP. Thank you so much for organizing this. This is about as much fun as a knitter can have with her clothes on. ha

Thanks for all of your hard work! Although my alma mater (Duke) is out of the NCAA tournament (and my UNC fanatic uncle won’t let me forget), I’m still in the running here.

When will you be matching us in Wendy’s Toe-Up Division? I keep checking. Still hoping against hope that the Novices will have a 16-strong dash for 8 places rather than a person-to-person knockout as we’re the newbies. But I’ll go with it whatever. And I for one am going to keep on knitting the socks whether I’m in the next round or not. AND I’ll be watching out for the next competition! I’ve been telling everyone, wherever I go, about this and how much fun (ok and stress) it’s been. Come to that, so has DH. He’s never seen me so madly focused.
